Welcome to Grade 7!

Welcome to Grade 7!

I am very excited to be welcoming both students and families to Grade 7 this year at Horizon Japan International School.

Along with being the Grade 7 Homeroom teacher, I will also be teaching English, Geography and History to the Grade 7's. This year, we have a wonderful group of teachers who will be guiding the students in an array of subjects. It is definitely going to be a year full of fun activities, exciting field trips, and lots of wonderful learning!

In English, we will begin the year with a detailed look at genre with the discussion of theme, plot, setting, and other literary features that make up different styles of writing. We will glimpse various genres including fiction, non-fiction, science fiction, biography, autobiography, fairy tale and comic strip.

In History, we will take a look at what history is all about. We will look at some important people and historical events, as well as historical sources.

In Geography, we start the unit by delving into the wonderful world of maps! We will study different types of maps, exciting map features and also how to be a good global citizen.

A little bit about me:

Originally from Canada, I have spent the past 6.5 years living and travelling around the world. After graduating secondary school from the small town of Kingston, Ontario, I flew across the country to Vancouver to do my first university degree at The University of British Columbia.
There I studied and achieved a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Theatre Studies.

Once my degree was completed, I decided to accomplish my dream of living and working around the world and set off on an adventure.

My first stop was Brighton, England where I lived and worked for 2 years. Although Brighton was nice, I decided some nicer weather was overdue, so decided to board a 42 hour flight and fly across the world to the beautiful New Zealand. There I completed my second degree, a Graduate Diploma in Teaching, and achieved that within the year.

While I was finishing my degree, I was snapped up by a wonderful intermediate school in the heart of Auckland, where I stayed for 3 years. I taught Year 7 and covered many subjects such as Reading, Writing, Maths, Unit Studies, Art, P.E. and Te Reo Maori. I have always loved learning about different cultures and so became involved in many school events such as the school’s annual Hangi’s, Fia Fia nights, and other cultural activities. I learned a lot about the surrounding cultures and was very happy to be in such a culturally inclusive school. There were at least 24 different cultures in my class alone!

Although I loved New Zealand, I found it was time for a new adventure and so I hopped on another airplane and flew to my 28th country, Japan! So far I am loving Japan and very much look forward to learning more about this beautiful country!

I am greatly honoured to be part of this wonderful school and am looking forward to working with you all throughout this year.

Best regards,

Miss. Sarah
